Schneider model

Where Agile lies?
Now that we have a self-organized team with empowered individuals and that the manager has delegated a lot of tasks, he/she can focus on growing the people! Like a gardener.

There, have you heard of the Schneider model? It models a company culture into 4 quadrants (you can tap on the picture above to enlarge it):
  • Control - "we succeed by getting and keeping control."
  • Competence - "we succeed by being the best."
  • Collaboration - "we succeed by working together."
  • Cultivation - "we succeed by growing people who fulfill our vision."
Agile is in the cultivation quadrant. How do you think of it?

Agile Manager is a servant leader (We've knew it since we are young I'm sure)
Shifting from the conventional management role to a servant leader role is not easy. Still, most managers I've worked with find the journey very rewarding.
Below are some tips to get you started:
  • Start using the word 'we' instead of 'I.'
  • Understand people's intrinsic motivators, then motivate and inspire rather than control
  • Ask questions rather than provide solutions (aka spoon-feeding)
  • Ask why what, what if rather than how who, when
  • Encourage creativity rather than conformity
  • Provide vision rather than instructions
By following these steps, you would have become an Agile Manager - often seen as someone who instills respect and creates other leaders.
